Have you heard the term "decarbonization"? "Decarbonization" refers to reducing the amount of greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere to almost zero in order to minimize the damage caused by climate change. In 2013, Japan's carbon dioxide emissions were 1.24 billion tons, and the goal is to reduce it to 670 million tons by 2030. Additionally, in October 2020, the Japanese government announced its goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2050, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, including carbon dioxide and methane, to zero overall.

Our parent company, Sumitomo Forestry, has formulated the long-term vision "Mission TREEING 2030" to realize a decarbonized society. We will conduct our business activities by maximizing the value of our strengths "forest" and "trees". We can contribute to a decarbonized society in three ways: by promoting carbon sequestration in wood, increasing carbon dioxide absorption in forests, and achieving long-term carbon sequestration in wooden buildings. Sumitomo Forestry has also been involved in a 15-storey wooden office development project in Melbourne, Australia, which is scheduled to be completed this year. This "net zero carbon building" is a project aimed at achieving a decarbonized society.

Since last year, our company has been entrusted with the task of calculating the CO₂ emissions of buildings from our parent company, and we have been using the software "One Click LCA (Life Cycle Assessment)" to calculate and visualize the CO₂ emissions from buildings.

The realization of a decarbonized society requires the cooperation of not only countries and companies, but also of each individual. We start with simple things, such as setting the temperatures of air conditioner and refrigerator according to seasonal changes, conserving lighting such as fluorescent lights, using bicycles and public transportation as much as possible, or walking if possible.
